Tax Debt Resolution: what usually happens

Reading where the account stands

Before choosing a resolution, it helps to know how far collection has progressed. Early notices are bills, while later ones may announce an intent to levy and offer a hearing that must be requested within a short window. That hearing is one of the more useful protections in the process, because it lets you propose an alternative to enforced collection and, in some cases, dispute the balance itself. The IRS can also certify seriously delinquent debts to the State Department, which can affect a passport, and New York State can suspend a driver's license for certain unpaid tax debts. Account transcripts show the assessments, payments, and penalties, along with the dates that control how long collection can continue.

Matching the option to the numbers

An installment agreement fits someone who can pay over time. An offer in compromise is evaluated against what the IRS calculates it could collect from your assets and future income, not against what feels fair. A temporary hardship status can pause collection when basic living expenses consume your income, although the debt and interest remain. Penalties are sometimes removable for reasonable cause or a clean prior history, which lowers the balance before any plan is set. Each path asks for a detailed financial statement that is checked against records, so accuracy matters more than optimism, and staying current on new tax obligations is usually a condition of any arrangement.

What we review with you

Bring every notice in date order, your recent returns, pay statements or business income records, bank statements, and a list of monthly expenses and assets. If some returns are still unfiled, they usually come first, because most resolutions are unavailable until filing is current. Bankruptcy can discharge some older income taxes, and while it is not the right answer for most people with tax debt, it is worth ruling in or out early. From there we can see where collection stands, which deadline is closest, and which resolution your numbers realistically support.
