Reasonable secrecy measures carry more weight than the secret itself. Under the DTSA and New York common law, a claim fails where the information was not actually protected — so the record of access controls, confidentiality agreements, exit procedures and device policies is usually what decides the case rather than the technical value of the information. New York is the exception among states. It has not adopted the Uniform Trade Secrets Act, so state claims rest on common-law misappropriation, and there is no state statutory damages or fee provision.
