Q
Is there a way to reduce driver's license penalty points?
Views3,544
Recently, driver's license penalty points have accumulated due to a traffic law violation, and I am worried because I heard that if it is left as it is, it could even lead to a license suspension. I am curious whether there is a way to reduce driver's license penalty points, whether they disappear only with the passage of time, or whether a reduction is possible through education or another procedure.

Driver's license penalty points can be reduced through education and the like if certain requirements are satisfied.
The fact that driver's license penalty points have been imposed does not mean that they remain as they are, and if the methods prescribed by law are used, the penalty points can be reduced.
The methods for reducing penalty points can be identified as follows.
① Special traffic safety education (penalty point reduction education)
When the driver's license penalty points are less than 40 points, completing the penalty point reduction education among the recommended special traffic safety education makes a reduction of up to 20 points possible.
However, the actual reduction is reflected only after the certificate of completion of the education is submitted upon finishing the education.
② Reduction through education while the license is suspended
Even where a license suspension disposition has already been received due to driver's license penalty points, a reduction is possible through education.
Completing the law-compliance education can reduce the suspension period by 20 days, and additionally completing the on-site participation education makes an additional reduction of up to 30 days possible as well.
③ Maintaining a period without violations and without accidents
Driver's license penalty points have a structure in which the points are deducted if there are no violations or accidents for a certain period.
In other words, if safe driving is continuously maintained, there is an effect of the penalty points naturally decreasing.
④ Reduction according to the type of accident
In the case of a traffic accident, when the victim's negligence is clear or when there is mutual negligence, the penalty points may be partially reduced.
For example, in the case of mutual negligence, there are cases in which the penalty points are reduced by half.
In addition, because driver's license penalty points can lead to a license suspension disposition once the accumulated points reach 40 points or more, the management of penalty points is very important.
To sum up, since driver's license penalty points can be reduced according to the completion of education, the maintenance of an accident-free record, and the type of accident, it is important to review the reduction method based on the current level and state of the penalty points.
