Customs attorney, I have something I am curious about, so I am asking. What procedure must be followed to bring items such as firearms, swords, and explosives in from abroad? I would like to know whether I just need to clear customs as with ordinary goods, or whether I need to separately obtain something like a permit or approval. I would appreciate a detailed and prompt answer. Thank you!

Hello. I am a customs attorney. To import items such as firearms, swords, and explosives, you must necessarily obtain the permission of the relevant agency under the 「Act on the Safety Control of Firearms, Swords, Explosives, and Other Such Items」.
Firearms and explosives require an import permit from the Commissioner General or the commissioner of the local police agency, whereas shotguns, swords, sprayers, crossbows, and chemical products can be imported with the permission of the local police agency commissioner alone.
However, imitation firearms are prohibited from import altogether under the relevant laws, so caution is needed.
In addition, military items must obtain separate permission from the commissioner of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration under the 「Defense Acquisition Program Act」.
At the time of import customs clearance, you must submit to customs the relevant supporting documents, such as the import permit issued by the relevant agency, so it is important to understand the procedure accurately in advance.
In addition, it is desirable to confirm whether the item you asked about is subject to import under the above laws by inquiring directly with the relevant agencies, such as the Life Order Division of the Korean National Police Agency or the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.
As such, because the relevant laws are complex and the procedures required by each agency differ, it is good to receive the assistance of a customs attorney.
Please note that thoroughly preparing from before the import greatly helps to reduce legal risks and ensure smooth customs clearance.
