Attorney, while watching the news recently, a question came to mind. I heard that you can receive a reward if you report a narcotics crime in advance or arrest the offender. Is a reward actually paid if you report narcotics? I only glanced at it, so I am not sure. I would appreciate a quick reply!!

Hello. This is an attorney specializing in narcotics cases at Daeryun Law LLC.
A reward is paid to a person who reports or accuses a narcotics crime to an investigative agency before it is discovered, or who arrests the offender.
However, a reward is not paid where a public official makes the report or accusation, or the arrest, in connection with his or her duties.
To receive a reward, you must submit an application for payment of the reward to the Minister of Justice through the chief prosecutor of the competent district prosecutors' office.
The reward is paid when the prosecutor institutes a public prosecution against the offender or renders a disposition of suspension of indictment, and it is paid within the maximum limit for each case, based on the sum of the amount of collection of equivalent value and the domestic wholesale price of the confiscated goods, or the sum of the expected amount of collection and the domestic wholesale price of the seized goods.
Even where the offender is not arrested and only the narcotics are seized, a reward may be received within the maximum limit, which ranges from a minimum of 1 million won to a maximum of 300 million won.
For detailed matters, you may wish to confirm them through a consultation with an attorney specializing in narcotics cases.
An attorney specializing in narcotics cases can guide you through the relevant procedures and payment requirements.
