Korean firm Daeryun to open first overseas office in New York

Daeryun, which is a Korean law firm established in 2018, has chosen New York as its first overseas office outside South Korea.

“New York is the centre of the international legal market, where global law firms converge and compete fiercely. In order to demonstrate that the capabilities of Korean law firms are effective on the world stage, we have chosen New York as our strategic first entry point,” Kukil Kim, the managing partner at Daeryun, told Asia Business Law Journal on why his firm chose the US city.

Kim said existing Korean law firms tended to prioritise achieving short-term profitability and reducing operating costs, which led them to favour the Southeast Asian region when expanding overseas for the first time. None of the traditional Big Six firms in Korea – Kim & Chang, Lee & Ko, Bae Kim & Lee, Yulchon, Shin & Kim and Yoon & Yang – maintain offices in North America.

“We will primarily focus on providing corporate clients with advisory services on international transactions and overseas expansion and entry,” said Kim. Conversely, the firm will also provide a range of solutions for US and other foreign companies entering the Korean market, including domestic market analysis, entry strategy development, permit procedures, and legal advice on labour and taxation.

Kim added that instead of limiting itself to the existing Korean client base, the firm would target companies and individuals of all nationalities within the US as prospective clients. Accordingly, it plans to hire local attorneys directly.

The New York office is scheduled to begin operations between June and August with a team of two to three attorneys holding US bar qualifications.

When asked on the opening of additional overseas offices, Kim said: “Market research and partnership discussions concerning major cities in Europe and Asia are currently underway internally including those in the UK, Germany, Singapore and Japan, as well as the Southeast Asian market.”

In 2024, Daeryun recorded revenue of KRW112.7 billion (USD81 million), ranking it among the top 10 law firms in Korea by revenue for the first time.

대륜의 김국일 경영대표변호사는 뉴욕을 선택한 이유에 대해 Asia Business Law Journal에 “뉴욕은 글로벌 메가 로펌들이 집결해 치열하게 경쟁하는 국제 법률시장의 중심지”라며 “한국 로펌의 역량이 세계 시장에서도 유효함을 입증하고자 뉴욕을 전략적 첫 진출지로 선택하게 됐다”고 밝혔다.

김 대표변호사는 일반적으로 한국 로펌들은 초기 해외 진출 시 단기적인 수익성 확보와 운영비 절감을 우선 고려하여 동남아 지역을 선호하는 경향이 있다고 말했다. 한국의 전통적인 6대 로펌인 김앤장 법률사무소, 법무법인 광장, 법무법인 태평양, 법무법인 율촌, 법무법인 세종 및 법무법인 화우는 모두 북미에 사무소를 두고 있지 않다.

김 대표변호사는 그러면서 “우선 기업 고객을 대상으로 한 국제거래 및 해외 진출·진입 자문을 핵심 업무로 삼을 것”이라고 말했다. 반대로 미국 및 기타 외국계 기업의 한국 시장 진입에 대해서는 국내 시장 분석, 진입 전략 수립, 인허가 절차, 노동·조세 관련 법률 자문 등 다양한 솔루션을 제공할 예정이다.

김 대표변호사는 또한 기존 한국계 고객층에 한정하지 않고 미국 내 모든 국적의 기업과 개인을 잠재 고객군으로 설정하겠다고 덧붙였다. 이에 따라 현지 변호사를 직접 채용할 계획이다.

뉴욕 사무소는 6월에서 8월 사이에 미국 변호사 자격을 소지한 변호사 2~3명으로 구성된 팀으로 운영을 시작할 예정이다.

추가 해외 사무소 개설에 관한 질문에 김 대표변호사는 “현재 내부적으로 영국, 독일, 싱가포르, 일본 등 유럽 및 아시아 주요 도시 및 동남아 시장에 대한 시장조사와 파트너십 협의가 진행 중에 있다”고 밝혔다.

대륜은 2024년 매출액 1127억원을 기록하며 매출 기준 국내 상위 10대 로펌에 처음으로 진입한 바 있다.
